SEATTLE FILM STUDIES, Nos. 1-3
The three pieces in the SEATTLE FILM STUDIES are part of an ongoing series of architecture-themed film compositions cut, layered, and constructed using sequential photos of the urban landscape in Pioneer Square and Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. Though the scale of presentation (as mural or large mounted acrylic print) and tactile nature of the medium builds an easily discernable aesthetic appeal, the compositions are still images in flux, caught between existence as a documentary record and an edited narrative.
SEATTLE FILM STUDY 1
The work displays a grace that belies the construction. Physically editing the film to create a documentary narrative - pushing beyond the still image - merging analog and digital processes - creating a contemporary approach to Constructivist photography. My first creative instinct was to be a filmmaker, and indeed all of my photography as a teenager and young artist was created on super 8 and 16mm movie film. I learned how to edit and create narrative by splicing pieces of film together, so I felt nothing strange or unusual about cutting up my medium format still film.
SEATTLE FILM STUDY 2
The pieces in the architectural Film Studies series are not meant to simulate panoramic views. My intent is to present a stop-start sense of motion at a single point in time, while creating new form and function from the existing architecture.
