COLOR FILMS BAROQUE
The pieces in the COLOR FILMS series document color palettes and compositions I make from photographs of pure color that I shoot with my medium format camera on analog transparency film. The transparency films (commonly known as “slide” film) are approximately 2.5” x 3.5”, and unlike a film negative, when viewed with light you can see the precise, exact image in full color.
The pieces in the COLOR FILMS BAROQUE series is an homage to the meditative nature the compositions possess as subjects in their own right, and to the intensity of the neo-classical color palette present in the photographs. I was greatly influenced by the minimalist color work of Ellsworth Kelly, specifically the structural experiments “Painting for a White Wall” and “SpectrumIX”, as well as the monolithic color fields of Mark Rothko.
I keep the black film frames as part of the composition to highlight the physicality (and scale) of the objects when presented larger than life in the prints. For the interplay of the colors, I wanted deep, realistic tones in the film photographs that invoke the color we actually see with our eyes, so I produced a color palette inspired by the intense hues found in 17th century Dutch Baroque art (think Dutch still life paintings), which set standards for naturalism in color that are unique and timeless.
COLOR FILMS come in two sizes: the 20" x 28" pieces are printed on museum-grade Ilford Gallerie Prestige photo paper, while the 42”x30” pieces are in an edition of fiveand are printed on museum-grade Hahnemühle Photo Rag, or as an acrylic facemounted piece.
